SALLY HANSEN SALON EFFECTS NAILS IN ‘KITTY KITTY’

How was your weekend? Mine was spent immersed in books (so, it was perfect). Between finishing a spell-binding novel for review on Literary Inklings to attending my first ever book signing, I had a fantastic time getting lost in my love for literature. I wore the above outfit to the book signing (after much deliberation – I’m one of those girls who throws her entire closet onto her bed in the process of getting ready. I’m not alone, right?). The event featured historical romance authors Eloisa James, Sarah MacLean and Julia Quinn in promotion of Eloisa’s newly-published memoir, Paris in Love, which chronicles a year in which she and her family moved to Paris on a whim after a family tragedy and cancer scare. It was very clearly a move meant to learn the art of embracing life anew, and from the reading she gave it’s evident that her adventure was a sweet success. The ladies discussed books, writing and their beloved shared genre of historical romance, and a champagne reception followed where I had the opportunity to meet each one of them. They kindly indulged my geekery by taking photos, so you can see those and read a full recap of the event over here.

Anyway! The outfit – this is my new favorite dress, just because. Crazy tribal print, fun sleeves. It makes me look a bit short, I never realized. But do I really care? Not in the least.

Literary Inklings is a brand-new blogging endeavor by Yours Truly. As anyone who reads The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower is aware, books are a very big part of my life; and as a result, they’ve become a part of this blog. It wasn’t my intention to write about books here when I first launched the site nearly two years ago, but my passion for reading and discussing books wiggled its way into my content and from there blossomed into wonderful opportunities. I’ve had the pleasure of working with authors I’ve long admired, as well as meeting some new favorites along the way, and in all having the chance to share my love of reading with the blog-reading world. I’ve loved every minute of it – and yet, nearly from the beginning I had the feeling that the book content didn’t quite fit within the premise of The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower. It was discouraging at times when I felt confused about where I wanted this blog to go and failed to see its identity clearly. My interests are so widely varied, it’s impossible to include books of merely one subject here, books that coincide with the theme and mission of The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower. When that happens…what’s a girl to do but begin a second blog? Thus, Literary Inklings was born.

Literary Inklings will not only serve as a dedicated location for the inane ramblings on my varied reading matter; my goal is to make it a place where readers can cozy up and immerse themselves in the world of literary arts. You’ll find discussion about new releases, seasonal reading lists, revels on characters both new and classic, ramblings on life as a bookworm, and commentary on film and television adaptations as well. You don’t have to be a voracious reader to enjoy Literary Inklings; whether your interest in books is that of a passion or an inclination, I hope you’ll find the new blog as welcoming as a cozy corner of a favorite bookstore – with lots of hot drinks and good conversation.

If you’re interested, feel free to stop over at LiteraryInklings.com and/or subscribe with the links above. Keep in mind that pages and exported content on the new blog are very much still under construction. I’m hoping to have everything all tidied up and an exciting new collaborative post with PBS published tomorrow, so check back on that. At present Literary Inklings does not have its own Facebook page – I had intended to change the name of The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower on Facebook to house both of my blogging endeavors, but unfortunately Facebook doesn’t seem to think that’s quite a fabulous idea and they’re refusing me the option. So! For now you’ll find updates from Literary Inklings on The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower’s Facebook page until I decide if I can honestly juggle yet another social media component. (Or if anyone tells me they’d like the blog to have its own Facebook page – I’m something of a pushover, so it wouldn’t take much.) You can also keep up with me on Twitter, as always.

As for The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower, I’m excited to renew my focus on fashion and beauty in particular here, as was my goal when I started, as well as the (admittedly less-often) looks into food, decor and Audrey-inspired living! Thanks so much to everyone who’s continued to support my ramblings in the blogging world – here’s to yet more adventures!

These past few days I’ve been up to my eyebrows in books. Most who know me will say that’s an everyday occurrence, and I wouldn’t deny it, but this has been quite a literal situation. I’ve been organizing bookshelves and unpacking boxes upon boxes of books. I won’t share the full bookshelf that holds all of my family’s books yet as it’s still a work in progress (in the meantime, you can catch a ‘before’ picture here!). Although the biggest bookshelf project may not be finished, I have made headway on organizing my personal bookshelves and I thought I’d share those today. A lot of you who got a glimpse of them in this post had mentioned how I organized everything, so I’ve noted a few tips I picked up along the way in the art of “styling bookshelves”!

Alternate the way you stack your books.
Keep it cohesive by focusing on colors that compliment each other.

Use books as bookends.
Use hardcovers and thick paperbacks for the best result

Utilize knickknacks and personal items.
I have an astonishing number of little perfumes so I decided to incorporate them onto the shelves for a bit of character. Also here, a framed Audrey Hepburn postcard from my sister and a birthday card from my aunt. Candles and candlesticks, little notebooks and even a silver clutch make an appearance on other shelves.

Go bold!
Tan, zebra print, black and mint was a spontaneous combination, but the result is one of my favorite shelves!

Focus on favorite themes.
I wanted to keep all of my Jane Austen novels, sequels and collectibles together, but I was coordinating by color. Still, I managed to incorporate four Jane-related things on this shelf, which gives it more of an informal theme.

Find new uses for old things.
This white “C” was probably intended as a business card holder? But I’ve always used it to hold jewelry. Now I decorated it with little dress ornaments. They’re too cute not to leave out year-round! (And yes, that’s a bottle of J.Lo Glo from my teenage years; you’ve found me out. Several of my bottles are too old and potent to actually be worn, but they work perfectly for decoration!)

I think if you take your time, use your imagination and experiment, styling shelves can be easy and maybe even a bit therapeutic (but then, all things involving books are therapeutic to me). And of course there’s always Pinterest for plenty of inspiration!

So now I want to know: how do you organize your bookshelves?

P.S. Check back on Sunday for a little giveaway as I launch my week-long “Little Fashion Week” series, a full week of nonstop daily content focusing on fashion and accessories!
