This mantle is so tricky to work with because the fireplace takes up the entire wall. What to do with all that space without making it look too cluttered? We started with only a few candlesticks and personal photos, but after raiding our library and pulling out a few overlooked design elements – plus a few autumnal touches – the space warmed up perfectly. I wish I’d thought to take some “before” photos, but it’s fairly easy to imagine how empty it looked.
Book vignettes are a favorite of mine. They look smart, they’re conversation starters, and they clear up space on the bookshelves (which is an excuse to, y’know, buy more books).
Social media friends will know that my beloved Dusty passed away earlier in the year; we wanted to have a keepsake photo out in his memory and I’m so happy with the way this one turned out (snapped on the fly by yours truly in between outfit photos). I can’t recommend Shutterfly enough for having your digital photos printed. They did a lovely job on this one. ♥
And yes, I went Pinterest crazy looking for inspiration. There are so many great fall decor ideas over there – I could start trying to autumnal-ize the rest of the house soon…
