When I saw that the theme for July’s FTFCommunity blog event (as hosted by Kristy Eléna of Full Time Fabulous) was focused on the beach I knew I wanted to take fashion seaside and dive into the nautical trend. We don’t exactly have beaches around here that I know of – in fact, I can’t remember actually going to a beach between now and once when I was…maybe eight years old? But the beauty of the nautical trend – something I adore but don’t often wear – is the way it brings the spirit of the seaside to everyday life, wherever you are. I love the water, so much that when I was little I decided I wanted to be a marine biologist when I grew up (a dream I never lived, needless to say). My favorite element about the nautical trend is the way it can be sophisticated and a little bit kitschy; it’s all in the mood. For this blog event I went for a bit of kitsch; the one that mixes a bit of vintage pin-up style with some good old Americana. I just had to figure out what medium I’d use. Photography was out, considering, and anyway I’ve already done it. I’ve done a Photoshop collage, and an outfit post, too, but then I realized…I’ve never put the two together…

What I wore… Capris: Counterparts | Top: Croft & Barrow | Sandals: Liz Claiborne | Cardigan: Izod
Featured fashion… find it all on my Nautical Style Shopping Guide at ThisNext
Everything else… Song: “Under the Sea” by Squirrel Nut Zippers | Nautical Patterns: Parasol Co.

omg!!! this is such a good idea!!! i love that you took the seaside inspiration and translated it into a nautical theme outfit! and i love the outfit and the way you put it into a collage. it’s so awesome!
Thanks so much, Kristy! It was so much fun to put it together – this might have been my favorite theme yet!
I totally love your inspiration board-esque interpretation of the FTF event! You did such a fabulous job on the graphics, too. This totally tugs at my heart strings ’cause I’m a complete sucker for the nautical look. I totally forgot about it and didn’t eve participate (how awful of me) Please remind me next month!

Thanks, Marissa! It’s such a fun trend, the nautical look, I can never get enough of it. I’m sorry you didn’t get to participate this time – it’s on for next month, I’ll be sure to badger you about it on Twitter or something!
What a nice collage! indeed very pin-up!! White, blue and red definitely look good on you! and those sunglasses are very 50s!
I also fell in love with this necklace you have on the collage…it’s no beautiful!
Thank you so much, Anna! I don’t typically wear most of these colors so I’m glad you think they looked good. That big necklace is Betsey Johnson, it has me so smitten too!
Love the way you interpreted the theme. The nautical trend really suits you
Thanks so much! I love the trend, but this was really my first time wearing it to the fullest. I’ll definitely be trying it again in the future!
I’m with you on the nautical trend and adore it! Aren’t you clever, I’m loving your style board and all of these elements you look beautiful and great pic (with the foot up is my favourite)
Thank you, Madison! So glad you liked the interpretation; I was afraid it would be a little too much of a departure from the beach theme. But it was the first thing that came to mind so I figured I should just go for it!
ohlala casee dear…I love the nautical look…same here I wasn’t able to go to the beach but I was able to find time to look for my old beach photos hahahaha!!!! the style board you made plus the seashells is such a brilliant idea…I want your skirt seriously…it looks gorgeous on you my dear!!!!

Thanks so much, Sweet! I don’t even know if there are any beaches around here, it’s sad. But I’m glad I went with the nautical look, it was really a lot of fun!
Very cute! I love your outfit! Very classy and right on for the nautical trend
Thanks so much, Heidi! It was my first time really trying the nautical trend. I wasn’t even sure if I had a full nautical outfit in my closet – it’s funny to see what you can piece together!
You are so creative! this is one of the cutest posts I’ve seen. you look so lovely in your nautical wear.

Thank you so much, Cheryl! I’m glad you liked the post. And I voted for you, of course! Wishing you so much luck with the contest!
Casee! This is such a cute idea and I’m blown away by how professionally you put this entire post together. I love the Sailor theme you used – the colors are perfect and look so good on you! Love, Love, LOVE!
Thanks, Jen! I really had no vision when I put it together so I’m glad it worked out. The pieces just all started coming together!
SO cute
Thanks, Juju! (:
What a fun collage. I enjoy looking at the different interpretations.
Thanks! It was such a fun theme, I loved all the contributions and seeing everyone’s interpretation. (:
fun!
how adorable is this post?! I love your take on the beach theme! The nautical look clearly works for you and I LOVED the island music below! Loved this month’s theme!
Thank you so much! It was such a fun little adventure to put the pieces together – I’ve never really done the nautical look before, much as I love it. And I’m glad you liked the music!
Can i hire you to be my photoshop guru, please? You amaze me.
I really look forward to seeing how you interpret these themes each month and of course you didn’t disappoint. Now I feel a bit ashamed that all I did was put a few photo collages together!
I love the nautical trend and this was a perfect way to illustrate how the sea inspires you. That photo of you wearing teh sunglasses? LOVE. And I want those sailor shorts. Gimme.
You’re too much, thank you. I always wonder if I should try to incorporate more Photoshop tutorials on here, but I don’t know how many people who read actually have/use the program. It’s really quite easy to achieve certain things, you just have to know which buttons to push! Getting the beveled look/drop-shadow on the text, it was a few years before I actually figured out how to use that. The steps I used to take to get the same effect took three times as long – at least!
And please, your collages were beautiful and your photos were completely stunning! At first I didn’t think I’d contribute to the theme at all because the beach is so foreign to me, but then the nautical idea popped up and I just couldn’t pass it by.
I love your spin on this Cassee! And I’m with B – teach me photoshop! I use it for work once in a blue moon and it’s always trial and error. Your collage, though, came out fantastic. Very impressive.
Thanks so much, Marissa! Ha, I really have nothing to teach. Photoshop has always been trial and error for me, too, that’s how I learned. I’ve just been practicing for a very long time!
You look so pin-up with the sungasses on in this outfit! I love this! The nautical trend is a favorite of mine, though I’ve never tried it before sadly =/ And this collage you put together with the music – perfection!
Haha, thank you! You should definitely try the nautical trend sometime – this was my first attempt at it, too, and I wasn’t even sure if I had anything in my closet to do the look with. You never know what you’ll find in your closet!
love your collage so nice idea!! truly inspired by the sea & fashionable!
kisses <3
Aww, thank you! I’m so glad you liked the post.
MAJOR awwwwwwwwwwwws and a standing applause from me!!! As you know I’m a total sucker when it comes to red lipstick and I really love how you incorporated it and echoed it on your sandals. The collage is so professional, it could be featured in any magazine! You’re so savvy with graphics.
)
You remind me of a mix between Gwen Stefani and Adele, with a strong touch of Natalie Wood. Only prettier.
Aww, so many compliments! Thank you so much, girly. All those lovely women, I’m honored I reminded you of them! I had a lot of fun putting this look together, just sort of piecing it together out of random bits from my closet. That sweater, for example, I haven’t worn in years! It’s heavy so it doesn’t suit all that well for the summer, but it was the perfect addition here!
Serious cuteness going on! This post makes me wish I knew someone with a boat. I need to take some time and enjoy summer! Love the collage
Aww, thank you, love! I wish I knew someone with a boat, too – whichever of us finds one first, we’ll have to get together and have us a little yachting party!
STOP IT!!!! Your post is spilling over with fun…I’m listening to “under the sea” as I write this swaying (hand on heart it’s the truth!!). Thank you for making me smile in a huge way, dear Casee, you always do such wonderful FTF posts.
Your outfit is fantastic!!! You look like a little smokin’ in a pin-up girl way. Lovely.
Ha, thank you so much! I was worried it had turned out a little silly – and with the music and everything – but then I hoped everyone would just have fun with it. I’m so glad you felt it!
You’ve only been to the beach twice?! Aw girl, you have to go to the beach more often (unless of course you don’t like it)- it’s one of my favorite things! I looooove this collage you made- your nautical outfit is fabulous. So creative to add the music to the collage too and I love the song you chose!
Thanks so much, Nnenna! I know, my lack of beach visits is embarrassing. I can’t say I don’t like it – I don’t think I’ve been enough times to really determine if I do or don’t, actually. I’m not a fan of overly crowded beaches, but the setting itself I love. Anyway, so glad you liked the post! It was so much fun to put together!
Girl you look gorgeous in this! and I love that you combined the two of these, its looks great!
Aww, thank you, Jessica!
1. Love your collage, it’s fantastic.
2. You are too adorable for your own good. Seriously!
3. I heart you.
This was such a great post for the blog event!! I didn’t participate this round, but your post made me wish I did. Love, love, love!!
Ha! You never fail to make me smile. Thank you! And I heart you too, by the way.
P.S. I’d love to see a post on the theme from you, even if the event’s already over!
I totally am smitten by you. Number one, LOVE that you gave us music. Two, so clever how you made it a nautical theme. I love blog events like this because everyone’s interpretations are so different and wonderful!
Thank you so much, Mattie! I’m glad you liked the post. And I absolutely agree, it’s such fun to see how everyone interprets the theme so differently. I love seeing everyone’s personality shine through their visualizations!
This is such a cute idea! You look amazing! I love those shorts in your collage!
Thanks so much, Kendra! I’m obsessed with those shorts – I’m always looking for a pair that have the high waist and big hold buttons, but they’re always much shorter than I want. It’s always a trial when you get that perfect idea in your head and spend ages trying to find just the right thing to fit it!
Love it! Nautical for me is something of an everyday thing (except in this blisteringly hot heat wave, which makes me sad). I think I just love wearing navy and stripes. I adore the touches of red in your featured outfit and the vintage Americana feel. It totally makes the outfit pop. And your bangs are to die for, my dear. Perfect hair as always!
Thanks so much, Heather! I know what you mean, the heat makes fashion take a backseat for me, really. I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one who loves the nautical trend! And for the bangs I just did a deep side part and pinned the hair – totally “manufactured” bangs, as it were.
What a beautiful inspiration board! Love that high waisted skirt!
Thanks so much, Kristin!
Super cute!!! I love how creative you were with the collage. Your outfit is amazing hun!
