“All the words I use in my stories can be found in the dictionary – it’s just a matter of arranging them into the right sentences.”
- Somerset Maugham
While I’ve been on a week-long holiday from the blog here I did have the great opportunity to join a host of stellar bloggers to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Stephanie’s marvelous blog, The Loudmouth Lifestyle! My contribution focuses on the concept of approaching blogging from an editorial standpoint – with the focus on writing as opposed to visual content – and I offered a few of my favorite tips to keep in mind when settling in to write your next editorial blog post. Enjoy!
P.S. The blog has a new header! Please let me know if there are any issues with the site’s new look. Thanks!
A few of the things that make my days merry and bright…
- Christmas movies: my favorites being Christmas in Connecticut and The Bishop’s Wife
- The incomparable Gingerbread Latte from Starbucks
- Debbie Macomber’s The Perfect Christmas – reading it has been my own little tradition since it was first published.
- Mexican Wedding Cakes (or “Nutcracker Nuggets”, as they’re called in my house).
- Warm slipper boots! I have a pair by Alfani that get me through the winter every year without fail.
Wishing you all the very merriest Christmas and the happiest of holidays! Have fun, be safe and get your fabulous selves back here in 2012 for some exciting new content!
- Don’t forget, Google will soon be making its Friend Connect program obsolete for blogs like this one so make sure you’re subscribing to The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower so you don’t miss a thing!

Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery. I quit such odious subjects as soon as I can, impatient to restore every body, not greatly in fault themselves, to tolerable comfort, and to have done with all the rest.
- Mansfield Park, Chapter 48
A goal of mine for the future is absolutely to acquire a matching set of Jane’s works – something pretty and practical, like above. I have a mish-mash of editions, some complete with footnotes and endnotes and lengthy introductions while others are simply the book as Jane intended it. The thing about Jane Austen’s popularity is that it sometimes hinders the ability to really collect her work. You wouldn’t think so, but it’s the truth. Jane’s everywhere; I’ll even say sometimes she’s unnecessarily so. Finding the must-haves – and without it looking all hodge-podge – would take a fair amount of skill and plenty of time. But that’s what makes a goal a goal, right? We’ll see.
A bit of Janeite trivia: the silhouette we all know so well as the icon of Jane Austen (as seen above) may not be Jane at all! The silhouette was found inside a second edition of Mansfield Park with the words l’aimable Jane written on it. The silhouettist was possibly a Mrs. Collins, who would have been in a time and place to have met Jane, but otherwise no one has ever truly confirmed that the silhouette is Jane Austen. Kind of crazy, isn’t it?
All the same: happy 236th birthday, Jane Austen!
